OM
[ listen ] [ order ]

AUM, commonly written as OM,
symbolizes the original sound.
In the begining was the Word.
Creation began with a Big Bang.
The Supreme Spirit is Shabda Brahman.

AUM represents the Universal Trinity.

A > Begining of creation.
U > Sustenance of creation.
M > Completion of creation.

The sound begins at the back of the mouth with A (mouth open); and the sound completes with M (mouth closed). In this way, it is called a complete sound containing all sound.

Through chanting OM, which means to concentrate on the mono-syllable sound, all unnecessary thoughts begin to leave the field of awareness. Through continuing the one-pointed focus a natural flow of thought on the one sound steadies the mind.

This unbroken concentration yields the stream of consciousness into the expansive realm of higher thought from which all knowledge flows. Residing in the sacred, all-encompassing sound the mind becomes tranquil, absorbed in the source of all sound.

Free from the cumbersome chain of dull and restless thoughts – residing as the silent witness – one experiences the peace that is inherently realized when the mind is focused. No longer fragmented with an unending stream of thought, the meditator is free from the ripples of the mind. Just as the calm lake clearly reflects the light of the moon, the calm, meditative mind reflects the inner light of Consciousness, Knowledge and Bliss.
